We found a monster tonight after dinner!
/me was way excited!
So for an entire year I've been hearing about these so-called "Monsters"
(kogaru in Japanese) from Tony's Japan tour last year, when they
were in full fashion force (since replaced by this year's stacky-boots
militia). I've seen them featured in all their glory in the New York
Times and Red Herring; spotting one was a different thing altogether.
Other monikers such as "raccoon" and "Japanese minstrel" (or J-minstrel
for short) come to mind, but "Monster" is the name that sticks. Their
fake-tan, fried-bleached hair, and the white bit of blackface makeup is
a lot of work, and I want to award their efforts by putting this photo
before all others on this page:
You've earned it. Consolation prize goes to the woman on the left. She was a Monster last year. |
Tonight was also the kickoff gig of Surgeon & Shufflemaster's Japan
tour at Tokyo's Maniac Love.
Personals
| Handsome guy, seeking attractive Japanese girl w/blonde hair (bleached ok) brown skin (fake tan ok) and blue eyes, (contacts ok) 165 cm (high heel ok) w/big breasts (padded bra ok) and shapely bottom (padded underwear ok). | Let's do something very secret and very very fun. | Japanese Buddhist monk, tall and nice-looking, 32, taken vows of celibacy. Seek a beautiful, intelligent Caucasian temptress non-drinker to test my resolve. If you are into sightseeing, temples, etc. |
Japanese-style omelet at a teppanyaki restaurant. Shibuya. |
Papaya Suzuki is his name. |
He's a professional dancer. Seriously. |
The club was actually very dark, but the flash managed to behave itself in this photo of Surgeon. Maniac Love, Tokyo |
C'mon. They're learning how to make ceramic bowls. |
View from the catwalk above the DJ booth, adjacent to the bar. Note the large tube above the crowd--that delivered cold air throughout the club. Apparently a concept alien to Dee Day organizers. Maniac Love, Tokyo. |
